well, this is my first post of 2022, so... a very belated happy new year! hope you're all keeping safe and healthy.
i'm here with jun's latest drama, tonari no chikara. i knew i would likely pick this up, i just didn't know whether i could really commit. but i'm gonna try anyway.
subs for episode 1. timed to the magicstar 1080p raw on nyaa. i've only skimmed it a little but it seems to also work with the 720p version over at arashigoodies, albeit off by a few frames here and there (though most people probably wouldn't notice).
translation notes - episode 1
narration: the narration is originally in present tense, but since i thought some lines would probably sound a bit clunky translated into english, i decided to use past tense instead. however, parts of it remain in present tense because they're supposed to be chikara's direct thoughts. so you get a mix of third person, past tense + first person, present tense, sometimes in the same scene.
that said, due to the lack of pronouns/names, it's not always clear whether the narrator is acting as the third person storyteller or as chikara's inner voice. and because i'm using different tenses unlike the original japanese, i occasionally have to decide which it is (which is surprisingly tricky). so if it seems somewhat off at times... it's probably my fault rather than the script itself. just putting that out there.
i might decide to tweak things in the future but to sum up, the general guidelines i'm following in my head:
* general narration -> third person, past tense
* chikara's thoughts/inner voice -> first person, present tense
* general descriptions (like the intro and outro) -> third person, present tense
incidentally, the cat narrator, which uses the pronoun "wagahai", is a reference to natsume soseki's famous novel "i am a cat" (wagahai wa neko de aru).
chikara's name: チカラ / 力 = both are read "chikara". チカラ is his name, 力 means "strength" or "power". 中 = can be read "naka" or "chuu".
越し / 腰 = both are read as "goshi" ("koshi" when it's a single kanji).
中越 nakagoshi = chikara's surname 中腰 chuugoshi = half-crouching, not standing upright, etc. see chikara's posture every time he starts worrying about something.
near the end, the narration says 腰の力が抜けるチカラ (koshi no chikara ga nukeru chikara), meaning "chikara whose waist/lower back relaxed" and which is a pun on all the above. there was no way (as far as i could see) to translate this and keep the wordplay, so i just translated it as is and added a "finally" as a way of hinting at how often we saw him in that "half-crouched" state.
spiders in japan: spiders are generally said to be good luck in japan, particularly when you see one in the morning. however, in some regions, spiders at night are said to be a bad omen and should be killed no matter what. in general though, it's recommended not to kill spiders, because they get rid of other insects. more detailed info. note: link contains images of spiders.
death by tofu: the full phrase of is "i hope you bump your head against the corner of a block of tofu and die". a joking, silly kind of way of saying "i hope you die". since you can't actually die from bumping your head against tofu, it's also used to make fun of people who can't take a joke and might take it seriously. (although in the case of chikara, you could interpret it as him being so nice that even when expressing anger, he's incapable of wishing harm on someone.)
